Murthly Sawmill is owned and operated by Murthly and Strathbraan Estates, and sells fencing, gates and timber products to businesses and members of the public.
The Birnam Hotel was built by Sir William Drummond Stewart, a former laird of Murthly, around the time when the Highland Railway Line opened in 1856. Birnam was a terminus station for many years and quickly became a popular travel destination. The large gates next to the hotel marked the entrance to the castle drive.
Local Information
Highland Perthshire is Scotland's outdoor playground and there's a lot going on throughout the year. There are traditional and modern pursuits alike; from fishing, walking and cycling to canyoning, stalking and white-water rafting. Indeed, the area as a whole is a fine mixture of the traditional and modern.
The Dunkeld and Birnam path network is extensive and has varied walks, all of which have historical interest and/or natural beauty. Two of the best-known attractions on the path network, Birnam Hill (of Shakespeare fame) and the Birnam Oak, are on Murthly & Strathbraan Estates.
For those more inclined towards life in the slow lane, Dunkeld and Birnam sits overlooking the River Tay and has a spectacular cathedral, a wide variety of shops, a Beatrix Potter exhibition and garden, and plenty of friendly pubs and eateries, many of which form the setting for the concerts of Scotland's folk musicans. It's also an excellent place to stay, with accommodation ranging from lodges, to caravan parks, to B&Bs, to the Hilton!
